I’d like reassurance we will NOT be seeing Common Core coming to Texas. And I’d like to know you will be getting rid of CSCOPE.

Great question, Camille. You can rest assured that we are on board with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). We do not support Common Core in Texas and we feel Texas knows best how to educate our children – not Washington, D.C. We will stand strongly against anyone who challenges the high standards Texas continues to set for our children.

Regarding CSCOPE, we passed legislation last session that stopped it. We will continue to monitor any efforts to implement CSCOPE or anything like it so it does not rear its ugly head again.

Does Austin know best or a parent about training up his/her 2, 3, and 4 year old child?

Can you link to the legislation passed to stop CSCOPE. Many seem confused about it. Can you clarify how it was stopped?

During the 83rd legislative session in 2013, General Abbott supported SB 1406 by Sens. Dan Patrick and Donna Campbell to restrict the use of CSCOPE materials in Texas classrooms. This bill gave the State Board of Education (SBOE) the right to review and approve curriculum materials developed by regional education service centers.

The text of the bill can be found here: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLookup/Text.aspx?LegSess=83R&Bill=SB1406

As Attorney General, Greg Abbott has demanded that the governing board of CSCOPE provide all available materials to requesting parents so that they can review material being presented in the classrooms. The Attorney General’s Office has also recently turned information over to the State Auditor relating to contracting irregularities for services commissioned by the governing board of CSCOPE in furtherance of it¹s activities.

Wasn’t there a bill to eliminate CSCOPE completely not just “restrict use of” that Sen Patrick stopped (literally on the house floor I believe)? Was AG Abbott in support of that bill? If so many want CSCOPE out of our schools completely why not pass such a bill? Wouldn’t children benefit by parental involvement spent differently than hawking over lessons from a vendor few trust?

Sadly, as a substitute teacher, I see teachers use materials online that support common core standards, I see the crazy common core math ladders, and when I ask other seasoned teachers about this the reply is that some of the newer teachers are being trained in other states and coming here teaching unacceptable methodologies, and coming through some of Texas teacher colleges and the union that is in support of common core. There are even commercials on tv now that are supporting common core and minimizing parents concerns, when in their gut, these parents know something is fishy in Denmark.
