Repeal the Sunset Act provision protecting state bureaucracy.
Government Code Section 325.020 explicitly states, “if an employee is displaced because a state agency or its advisory committee is abolished, reorganized, or continued, the state agency and the Texas Workforce Commission shall make a reasonable effort to relocate the displaced employee.” This undermines the intent of the Sunset process to create a leaner, more efficient government. If the Sunset process determines that an agency is no longer needed, the state should not continue to employ someone simply because they once worked for a state agency that is now defunct. State hiring decisions should be based on merit and on the need for a particular employee at a particular agency.
