Back in my day of grades 7 and 8 we had mandatory health classes. I have no idea to what is taught today, but have ideas on, wrt this topic, what could be taught to develop healthier children. First I have observed over the past decades that children of family and friends are raising themselves. Meaning making decisions on their own cleanliness, dressing, entertainment activities, eating habits, values, etc. Basically, guidance is minimum. I am not stating a lack love for their children, but a lack of guidance. The child comes home hungry and ready to play. The child grabs whatever is quick without a single thought of the health nature of the food choice. Could health classes in grades 7 through 8 help? If the class is a boring lecture on healthy and unhealthy choices; I see only a small percentage listening and implementing the knowledge. What if actual meal preparations of healthy choice meals were included? Pick 5 to 7 minute meals to prep and have the children do the preparation in class…visualize chemistry lab for this approach. If they learn, each and every day, a new choice and how to actually prepare their healthier meal would a larger number of children implement at home? If these children did would it also not get reflected into their parents?

Great thought, thank you Mr. Bennett! What do you think of the TEKS for health education? http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter115/index.html
