  • DWI/ vehicular manslaughter increased punishment

I have sat amd watched 2 of my friends lose children to a drunk driver. The first, his 20 year old daughter had just left work and was on her way to eat with her boyfriend and was slammed by a monster, 40 years old, 3 times the legal limit, killing her instantly. His sentence. …8 years. Fast forward 4 years, we are writing letters to the parole board to keep him from gettimg out early, he took a life, he knew when he went to bar that night he would drink, he knew he would get behind the wheel, without caring if he took a life or not. During that 4 years, I had to help my best friend of 30 years bury 2, yes 2, of her children. A 19 year old daughter, who has an 18th month old, and her 15 year old son. Also killed by a drunk driver, but she also took another life, another young child, she also ran from the screen. Even after admitting to drinking, since it has been 18 hours since the accident, a blood alcohol test ccouldn’t be done. She took 3 lifes, the most she can get is 20 years…..thats it. This isn’t manslaughter, its pre mediated murder. You make a decision to go out, know you are going to drink, but then you aren’t responsible enough to have a designated driver or to call a cab, you had it planned out….. harsher punishment is needed, not only for taking a life but for being caught. You take a life, go to jail for life. First time you are caught, a large fine, community service at a funeral home and madatory counseling. 2nd time, even larger fine, breathlizer testing prior to driving period and additional community service with a program such as MADD or Shattered Lifes or Krystas Karing Angels. NO family should have to endure this pain…..EVER….its a crime that is 100% preventable! !
